Russian music-making at its most intense ...
"The Kopelman Quartet has in abundance all the ingredients that weld together to make a great quartet ... Stunning and eloquent ... tremendous exhilaration and brilliance." The Strad
Both the music of Shostakovich and his contemporary Mieczyslaw Weinberg guarantee a heightened emotional experience for audiences at the Wyastone Summer Series. Few quartets bring a greater stylistic authenticity to this music than the Kopelman Quartet, led by Mikhail Kopelman, leader of the legendary Borodin Quartet for twenty-five years. Since their formation in 2002, they have attracted extraordinary reviews, establishing them as one of the key string quartets of the present time.

Gwilym Simcock is one of the most outstanding jazz pianists and composers of his generation. Emerging fully formed after a dazzling spell at music college, he is the most talked about jazz pianist in the UK since the early days of Django Bates. His music is engaging, exciting, melodically enthralling and wonderfully optimistic. A previous winner of the Perrier Award, BBC Jazz Awards and British Jazz Rising Star Awards 2005, he is currently a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist - the first jazz artist to be selected.
The concert will include music from Gwilym Simcock’s recent album, Perception.
"Gwilym’s an original. A creative genius." Chick Corea
"No young musician outside the pop world has moved as fast into the upper reaches of his profession as Simcock." Observer Music Monthly

A grand finale to the Summer Series conducted by its Artistic Director, William Boughton, now Music Director at New Haven Symphony Orchestra, USA. The music ranges from the mythical fairytale charm of Sibelius’ music for Pelléas and Mélisande (you’ll recognise the theme tune from The Sky at Night) to Vaughan Williams’ depiction of the timeless and serene flight of the skylark soaring over an idyllic landscape and the grandeur of Mozart’s magisterial last Symphony - the Jupiter.

Description: |
Irish virtuoso fiddle player and Chicago born guitarist, Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill have reached almost cult status on the international music scene. Their spell-binding interpretations of Irish music are drawing an ever-increasing audience world-wide. Their music is a pure distilled art, drawing on the slow, lyrical traditions of Hayes' native East Clare, the intensity of classic blues, the elastic tonalities of jazz, as well as Cahill's innovative finger-picking style.
